Piekenierskloof - Home of Grenache
Piekenierskloof is a historic, scenic mountain pass and wine-producing ward in the Western Cape, South Africa, located near Citrusdal, about 2 hours from Cape Town. Known for its high-altitude dryland vineyards and the 4-star Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort, it is a popular destination for eco-tourism, wine tasting, and history, particularly regarding the old Dutch "pikemen" who guarded the pass.
As a wine ward, it is celebrated for its older vines, particularly Grenache, which thrive in the sandy Tafelberg Sandstone soils at high altitudes.
The Home of Grenache in South Africa
Grenache has a long and storied history in South Africa, and Piekenierskloof stands proudly at the centre of its modern revival. The region is home to South Africa’s oldest Grenache vineyard, planted in 1973, and today features the country’s largest concentration of Grenache plantings.
Set high above the West Coast at elevations of 650–700 metres, Piekenierskloof’s vineyards benefit from warm sunny days and cool mountain nights — ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. This unique climate allows Grenache to develop remarkable purity of fruit, vibrant natural acidity, and refined tannin structure.
Many of the estate’s dryland bush vines are more than 60 years old, ungrafted and naturally disease-resistant, producing low yields of intensely concentrated fruit. The result is wines with exceptional character, depth, and elegance.
At Piekenierskloof Wines, Grenache is celebrated in both single-varietal expressions and carefully crafted blends, showcasing layers of bright red berry fruit, gentle spice, and distinctive mineral freshness. Every bottle reflects the authenticity of the land — expressive wines shaped by heritage, altitude, and terroir.
Piekenierskloof Wines' labels, like their wines, are rooted in history. The orange top honors Dutch origins and citrus farming. Each label depicts a "Piekenier," a historical watchman, in dynamic poses, narrating the winemaking journey.
